Support services to people with acquired brain injuries (ABI) and their caregivers

ABI Support Groups

  • gives ABI survivors and caregivers opportunities to discuss daily experiences and common issues, learn more about living with an ABI, and positively engage with other members and families
  • guest speakers from different professions/disciplines relating to ABI, also deliver presentations and share resources at group meetings
  • speakers range from health care professionals to tax specialists
  • while weekly meetings invite both survivors and caregivers, BIAPH holds monthly meetings that are exclusively for caregivers

Headspin: Young Adult Support Group

  • group designed for high functioning youth and young adults with an ABI or individuals experiencing similar challenges
  • focuses on building community and friendship through community-based leisure activities and regular meetings
  • although many members live in Peel and Halton regions, it also has members living in cities such as Toronto, Thorold, Ridgeway, Elora, Richmond Hill, and Niagara Falls.

Caregiver Relief Program

Provides relief to families and primary caregivers of survivors of ABI
Services include:

  • Attendant Care including personal care, household tasks, support within the home
  • Community Social Support including assistance accessing community programs and resources
  • offers safe environment for members to share their stories, access information from professionals, and for recreational and social activities

Peer Support Services

  • available for those who are living with an ABI, and allows them to connect to an individual who has lived through a similar life experience involving an ABI
  • mentor's role is to provide guidance, knowledge, and support, based on their own life experience involving an ABI
  • while this program is coordinated through local affiliated brain injury associations across Ontario, the BIAPH branch is coordinated by Sue Brushey, who has supported BIAPH and the ABI community for numerous years
